Health and Safety Policy for Self Storage Fulham
Self Storage Fulham is committed to providing a safe, healthy and secure environment for our customers, staff, visitors and contractors, including those involved in removals and transportation of goods to and from our facility. This Health and Safety Policy sets out the principles and procedures that guide our approach to managing risks and promoting safe behaviour on our premises.
Policy Statement and Objectives
Our objective is to prevent accidents, injuries and damage to property by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing sensible controls. We recognise our responsibilities under relevant health and safety legislation and aim to work to best practice standards appropriate to a modern self storage and removals-access site.
We will provide suitable information, instructions and guidance to all users of the facility so that storage activities, loading and unloading, and movements of vehicles and goods are carried out safely.
Management Responsibilities
The management of Self Storage Fulham has overall responsibility for health and safety at the facility. This includes establishing and reviewing safety procedures, ensuring appropriate resources are available, and promoting a culture where safety is an integral part of daily operations.
Management will ensure that risk assessments are carried out for key activities, including vehicle access, manual handling, use of trolleys and handling aids, and movement of goods in storage corridors and loading areas. Control measures will be implemented and monitored to reduce risk as far as reasonably practicable.
Staff Responsibilities and Training
All employees have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Staff must follow company procedures, use equipment correctly and report hazards, near misses or incidents without delay.
Self Storage Fulham will provide staff with appropriate training and information, which may include:
Induction training on emergency procedures, fire safety and site rules. Manual handling awareness and safe lifting techniques. Safe supervision of removals vehicles and loading activity. Incident reporting procedures and first aid arrangements.
Training needs will be reviewed periodically and refresher training provided where necessary.
Customer and Contractor Responsibilities
Customers, removals companies and other contractors using our facility also share responsibility for maintaining a safe environment. All users must comply with site safety rules, signs and instructions given by staff.
Customers and removals operatives are expected to:
Use provided loading bays, trolleys and equipment correctly. Avoid blocking fire exits, corridors or vehicle access routes. Follow safe manual handling practices and use sufficient personnel for heavy or bulky items. Keep children and untrained individuals away from loading areas. Report any hazards, spills or damage to staff immediately.
Contractors providing removals or related services are responsible for the safety of their employees and must ensure they are competent, insured and aware of our site rules.
Safe Use of Facilities and Equipment
Self Storage Fulham provides equipment such as trolleys and handling aids to support safe loading and unloading. Users must inspect this equipment before use and report any defects to staff. Damaged or unsafe equipment must not be used.
Corridors, stairwells, lifts and loading zones must be kept clear at all times to allow safe passage of people and goods, as well as access for emergency services. Loads should be securely stacked on trolleys and moved at walking pace, with particular care taken on ramps and in lift areas.
Manual Handling and Removals Activities
Manual handling is a key element of self storage and removals work. To reduce the risk of injury, customers and contractors should:
Assess the weight and size of items before lifting. Use mechanical aids or additional people for heavy or awkward items. Keep loads close to the body and avoid twisting while lifting or carrying. Take breaks when performing repetitive lifting tasks.
Where removals companies operate on site, they must manage their teams and equipment in a way that protects both their staff and other users of the facility.
Vehicle Movement and Parking
To minimise the risk of accidents associated with vehicles and removals vans, Self Storage Fulham will manage traffic routes and loading areas so far as is reasonably practicable. Speed must be kept low within the site, and reversing should be kept to a minimum.
Drivers must follow site signage and staff instructions, park only in designated bays and ensure that vehicles do not block access roads, fire lanes or emergency exits. Engines should be switched off when vehicles are stationary for loading or unloading.
Fire Safety and Emergency Procedures
Self Storage Fulham maintains fire detection, alarm and emergency escape provisions in line with relevant requirements. Fire exits and escape routes must be kept clear at all times. Customers and contractors must not store prohibited items, including flammable, explosive or otherwise hazardous materials, as set out in our storage agreement and site rules.
In the event of a fire alarm or other emergency, all occupants must follow staff instructions, evacuate promptly via the nearest safe exit and assemble at the designated point. Lifts must not be used during an evacuation.
Accident Reporting and Investigation
All accidents, incidents, near misses and cases of property damage on site must be reported to staff as soon as possible. Accurate recording of incidents enables us to investigate causes, identify trends and take corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Where required, incidents will be reported to the relevant authorities. Lessons learned from investigations will inform updates to our procedures and risk assessments.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed periodically and whenever significant changes occur to our operations, facilities or the services we support, including removals-related activity. Customer feedback, incident data and staff observations will be used to improve standards and strengthen our safety culture.
By working together, Self Storage Fulham, our customers, removals partners and visitors can ensure that the facility remains a safe and efficient environment for storing and moving goods.
